I had a friend that I used to go kayaking with. He was a SOLID boater. He had a 100% roll and regularly paddled class IV and some class V rivers. He and his wife had their first baby a couple of years ago and he had to step away from kayaking for a little while.

The last time I went boating with him was on the Nantahala last year. The Nantahala is only really a class II, III river, so I thought it would be a piece of cake for my buddy who hadn’t boated in only 10 months. Right out of the gate, the first rapid we hit, he flips, tries to roll twice, misses both attempts to right the boat and swims.

Did you hear what I said, my buddy, who was an AMAZING boater, got out of the environment of kayaking for only ten months, and then screwed up the first rapid he hits and has to go for a swim.

Consistency in kayaking, and in your spiritual life, matters. It’s possible to get “it” and then, through a change in your environment, to not get “it”. And don’t miss this,It’s because of the environment you’re in. Check out the principle laid out in Psalm one. Keep your ears open in Summit over the next month to find out the best environment!

Tomorrow I’m speaking in DBC’s three morning worship services. The message is part of a series that Bill asked me to be a part of about marriage relationships and how they mirror God’s relationship with his believers. And while I always feel humbled and awed to be able to serve in this way… tonight that feeling pales in comparison to the expectation and excitement about being able to baptize Mac tomorrow. Tomorrow my first son, that unashamedly proclaims Jesus (to the point of getting in a little trouble at school, instructions and clarification given after the incident, but I am still a little proud) is going down into a liquid grave and rising out of the water as a symbol of his new birth in Christ…

Yea… I’m excited!

Finishing teaching through Ecclesiastes has been fun! (at least for me) It is a book that has a definite flavor of desperation and maybe to some degree hopelessness. I mean here’s Solomon, a guy that had it all, lived it all, and accomplished it all. And then taking that”all” and putting a huge rubber stamp on it: “Meaningless” (meaningless echo)

We started pushing near the end of this series, the standard Sunday School answer that you guys knew was coming, so let again just throw this out there, “Jesus is the Answer.” I can hear the groans and the, “Duh Dennis!” coming from the peanut gallery now. (check out Toby’s teaching, “Happy without Answers” again for this to be fleshed out)

So what are you doing to make Jesus your answer? Do this:

Get into a quiet time habit!! Carve out at least three days a week.

Grab your Bible and a journal during your quiet time.

Give God at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted time, reading your Bible and praying.

During your quiet time read through about a chapter a week. There really isn’t any hurry!

Do this consistently for 6 months and see what happens.

The tendency is to start strong and be good to go with your devotional time for about two weeks, then get discouraged because you don’t feel like you’re getting anything out of it, let other things start to take priority, and then let a week go by without cracking open your Bible. GIVE IT SIX MONTHS AND MAKE YOUR QUIET TIME A PRIORITY.

If Jesus really is the answer to meaninglessness and the only purpose to life, then this could be the best six months you’ve ever invested!
